Nyla Ali Khan Biography

Dr. Nyla Ali Khan is an academician and author from Jammu and Kashmir. She is an author of two non-fictional books on Kashmir - ‘The Fiction of Nationality in an Era of Transnationalism and Islam’, ‘Women, and Violence in Kashmir: Between Indian and Pakistan’. Khan is a Visiting Professor at the University of Oklahoma and former professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearne. She is the granddaughter of Sheikh Abdullah, an Indian statesman who played a central role in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2015 she became the first Kashmiri woman to be nominated and selected as a member of the Advisory Council for the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women.

 

She was born in New Delhi into a political family in the year 1972. She is of Kashmir ascend and was brought up in Kashmir Valley. Her father, Mohammad Ali Matto, is a retired physician. Her mother, Suraiya Abdullah Ali, is a retired professor of literature. She is a single girl child to her parents. An excellent student in studies, she took her Master’s and PhD from University of Oklahoma, Norman. She was one of the organizers of 2006 South Asian Literary Association Conference on the subject of “Post colonialism and South Asian Diasporas”.

 

As an author, The Fiction of Nationality in an Era of Transnationalism was her first work. Islam, Women, and Violence in Kashmir: Between Indian and Pakistan – was her second book. She received rave reviews for both these research works on the life of Kashmir. She has also contributed articles to many leading journals in India and abroad. She is a faculty member at the University of Oklahoma and a member of the Scholars Strategy Network at present.
