Nutan Biography

If someone asks you to name the best three Bollywood actresses of 50’s -60’s or the best 5 actress all time in Bollywood, no doubt, no one can neglect this great woman onscreen. She created magic on screens and added many records in her career over a life span of about 40 years in Bollywood. She belongs to a family, filled with actors of Bollywood. Tanuja is her younger sister while most talented actresses Kajol and Rani Mukherjee are her nieces. You can add a lot of successful and unsuccessful actors to this category. Her son Monish Behl is a successful serial actor and character actor who has done good work in Sooraj Barjatya movies like Hum aapke hain kaun and Hum saath saath hain. It can be said that she passed over her full talents to her niece Kajol, who is still ruling Bollywood.

Nutan holds the title of maximum Filmfare awards in leading role female along with her niece. She won 5 times the best actress award for her magical performances in Bandini, Milan, Sujatha, Seema and Mein tulsi teri angan ki. Winning the best actress award through ‘Mein tulsi teri angan ki’, she became the oldest winner in this category. She won it when she was 42. If you take the total awards in female category, she shares the records of 6 along with Jaya Baduri. She got her last Filmfare for her supporting role in Mere Jung. Though she was the most priceless actress of 50’s, she got an opportunity to act with Dilip Kumar, the ruling star of the industry only in 1986 movie, Karma.

It’s not at all an easy task to describe the great phenomenon of Bollywood ‘Nutan’. Many leading actresses of Bollywood had agreed that they follow Nutan’s steps while doing movies and have achieved success. Though she acted as next door girl in majority of her movies, it’s bit surprising that she was the first Indian lady to appear in a bikini for an Indian movie. She was Miss.India 1952. Her mother was an actress and producer, who produced Nutan’s first movie as heroine – Hamari Beti. Her most powerful performances include Bandini, Sujatha, Seema, Sarswathi Chanda, Mein tulsi tere angan ki, Paying guest, Anari, Khandan, Dulhan ek raat ki, Saudagar and Sajan bina suhagan. She has been awarded Padma shri in 1974 by Indian government. She died at a comparatively young age of 54 in 1991, due to brain cancer.
