Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Biography

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s name is among the blessed artists the whole musical world has ever witnessed. He re-defined Qawaali in his own means and popularized it all over the world. He belongs to a singing family that owns 600 year old Qawaali tradition. Though he is from Pakistan, he has done a few works in India and has millions of admirers still now. Among all Pakistani singers, it was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice that Indians accepted most. He has an extra ordinary talent in singing in high pitches continuously for hours, almost an impossible task for normal singers. He is also known as ‘Shehanshah of Qawaalis’ and the most renowned Pakistani musician of the latest era of music. Qawaali is a branch of Pakistani Sufi music and through the numerous compositions he has done, he has proved his versatility in this section. He still holds the Guinness records of highest number of Qawaali albums – 125.    

 

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the son of great Fateh Ali Khan. His brother is also a great Qawaali singer. His nephew Rahet Fateh Ali Khan is a successful Bollywood playback singer right now. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan through his famous compositions like ‘Tere bin nahi ladtha’, ‘Kitna sona tujhe’ and ‘Afreen Afreen’’, conquered millions of Indian hearts. He associated with A.R.Rehman in composing songs for his megahit album ‘Vande matharam’ on the golden jubilee year of independence of both India and Pakistan (1997). He has also given the music of Aiswarya rai’s debut movie – Aao pyar karein in 1997, exactly the same year which he passed away due to cardiac arrest following a kidney transplant. His composition ‘Tere bin nahi ladtha’ was used in the movie ‘Kache daage’ and later a reviewed music video too. His song ‘Ishq ka rafta’ was included in the movie Kartoos (1999).

 

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan did his first public performance at age of 16 and in the year 1971, he became the head of the family qawwali party (official leader) after the death of Mubarak Ali Khan. Later through his talent and versatility he became a well known world music artist and did concerts in almost 40 foreign countries, thus popularizing Qawaali worldwide. He associated himself with many international singing bands too.

 

It’s not at all an easy task to list his important works. Each and every piece of art is just like a lovely poem. Nusrat’s Qawali party has composed many compositions and he has done many live concerts too, that music lovers still remember. He died just 1 day later the golden jubilee Independence day celebrations of India and Pakistan, i.e. on 16th August 1997 at a comparatively younger age of 48. He was unmarried.
