Nityanand Kanungo Biography

Nityanand Kanungo was a prominent politician from Odisha in the 20th century. He held an important position in politics at centre, soon after independence, and was a member of Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. In 1952, Kanungo was elected to the first Lok Sabha from the Kendrapara constituency representing Indian National Congress, and in 1954 he was appointed Union Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry. He served as a cabinet minister in Nehru’s cabinet since 1955, and has held portfolios, Industries and Consumer Industries as union minister. He has also served as a member of the Orissa Legislative Assembly twice in the pre-independent era. The famous social activist and freedom fighter Sarala Devi was his sister-in-law.

 

Nityanand Kanungo was born on 4 May 1900 in Cuttack, British India, of present day Odisha. He completed his college studies from Ravenshaw College and University College, affiliated to University of Calcutta. His active entry to politics happened in the 1930s, when he was elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1937 and served the term for two years. He was elected to state assembly for the second time in 1946, and he served the term for 6 years till 1952, till well-organized state assembly came into being after independence. After that he moved to national level politics, and succeeded in this field as well.

 

He served as the Minister for Revenue and Public Works Departments in the cabinet of Biswanath Das, when he was elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1937. After independence, he has been elected to Lok Sabha for the first three general elections, held in 1952, 1957 and 1962. Later he has served as the governor of Gujarat and Bihar as well.
