Nithyasree Mahadevan Biography

Nithyasree, also credited as Nithyasree Mahadevan is an eminent Carnatic musician and playback singer of Tamil movies. Her association with A. R. Rahman has created great hits like Kannodu kanpathellaam of Jeans, Title track of Alaipayuthey, Manmatha Maasam of Parthaley paravasam, Kumbakonam Sandhayile of New, Minsara kanna of Padayappa and Sowkiyama Kannae of Sangamam. Other popular tracks of Nithya are "Oru Nadhi Oru Pournami" from Samurai, "Thaai Thindra Mannae" from Aayirathil Oruvan and "Kana Kaangiren" from Ananda Thandavam. On the 123rd birthday celebrations of Papanasam Sivan, she was conferred with the title, Sivan Isai Selvi by veteran musician P. S. Narayanaswamy. Most recently she was in news as her husband, Mahadevan committed suicide on 20 December 2012 following a depression. On 3 February 2013, she returned back to her live concerts after overcoming the unfortunate death of her husband.


Nithyasree was born on August 25, 1973 in a musical family. Her paternal grandmother, D. K. Pattammal and her granduncle, D. K. Jayaraman were prominent Carnatic vocalists. Her maternal grandfather was the mridangam maestro, Palakkad Mani Iyer. Her father, I. Sivakumar was mrigangam player and she took her first vocal lessons from her mother, Lalitha who herself is a trained Carnatic singer. Mahadevan's maiden performance was titled 'best concert of the series'. Nithya has performed in all major sabhas all over India and has travelled throughout many countries with her Carnatic musical concerts.

 
She conducted her first Carnatic performance for Youth Association For Classical Music on 10 August 1987. She has performed in many countries including US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia, UAE, Germany, France and Malaysia. She has performed for the "Sangeeth Natak Academy" twice, held at Bombay and Hyderabad. "Kalaimamani" by Tamil Nadu Government in 2000, "Yuva Kala Bharathi" title by Bharath Kalachar in 1994, "Isai Paeroli" by Kartik Fine Arts in 2001 and "Innisai Maamani" by Tamil Nadu Welfare Association are a few of the titles owned by this talented singer from south.
