Nissar Hussain Khan Biography

Nissar Hussain Khan was a Hindustani classical vocalist who belonged to Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of Hindustani music. He was a disciple and son of Ustad Fida Hussain Khan and was the court musician of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III at Baroda. He regularly performed at All India Radio and was a specialist in Tarana. His most famous disciple is Rashid Khan who is his grandnephew. He is a recipient of Padma Bhushan in the year 1970. He has recorded several records with HMV since 1938. Ustads Bahadur Hussain Khan, Inayat Hussain Khan, Fida Hussain Khan and Mushtaq Hussain Khan are other leading names of Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of Hindustani music.

 

Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan was born in the year 1909. He inherited the singing talent from his anscestors. His father Ustad Fida Hussain Khan was a famous vocalist of Rampur-Sahaswan gharana under whom Nissar learnt the first lessons of Hindustani music. He embellishes the modal form of the ragas with glimpses of "gamaks", "bol-taans" and "sargams” and was regarded as a doyen of the "khayal" style who renders "taranas" with distinction.

 

He is also known as a good teacher under whom several students have learnt music. Among all his disciples, the most accomplished name is Rashid Khan, who is his grandnephew. It was Nissar who noticed the real potential of young Rashid and nourished it and provided him with everything he can. He trained Rashid first at his own residence at Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, and subsequently at the Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, where he worked as a faculty till the end of his life. He has given 78rpm Recordings and EP/LP Recordings with HMV since 1938.
