Niranjanananda Biography

Niranjanananda was one of the foremost monks of Ramakrishna Mission. He was also one of the direct monastic disciples of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and met him for the first time at the age of 18. He was born as Nitya Niranjan Ghosh into a Bengali family in Rajar Hat – Bishnupur, Bengal Presidency in British India. His association with the newly formed Ramakrishna Mission was short lived, as he had an early death aged only 42. But he left an impression in his short-lived life, for which he is remembered most. He is often prefixed as Niranjanananda (Senior), as there was one more saint with the same name associated with Ramakrishna Mission.

Niranjanananda was born as Nitya Niranjan Ghosh in 1862 in Bengal. He was then fondly called Niranjan. Born in Rajarhat-Bishnupur village in 24 Paraganas of Bengal province, his childhood days were spent in Kolkata, where he lived with his uncle’s family. He came into contact with a group of spiritualists, which put deep impressions in his child mind. During his teens he worked in Murshidabad for a while. He met Ramakrishna for the first time at the age of 18. After a few frequent visits he got drawn towards spirituality and charisma of the saint.

Niranjan took up the job to maintain his aged mother, and his guru appreciated it, though he was not in an opinion of monks working in office. During the last years of Ramakrishna, he did his role as a gatekeeper for his guru with utmost devotion, preventing others from entering the premises and disturbing his guru who was ill. Niranjan took his monsatic vow along with his fellow disciples in 1887. According to Ramakrishna, Niranjan was an ever pure soul.
