Niralamba Swami Biography

Niralamba Swami was a great nationalist and freedom fighter, most known for the freedom struggle movement aside Aurobindo Ghosh. Jatindra Nath Banerjee is the real name of this saint and he changed his name soon after Aurobindo Ghosh became Sri Aurobindo. From great revolutionaries, both changed to yogis and they rose to prominence between 1871 and 1910.

He was born in the year 1877 at Channa village in Burdwan district. His father was a government servant employed at Bangaon of Jessore district. He studied from Burdwan Raj College. During this time he was drawn towards political activities of India. He believed in the revolutionary methods to attain India’s freedom and preached those ideas as well. He left his studies in the middle to train himself in martial arts to prepare for struggle against British. Though he tried to find space in British army he couldn’t.

In search of a job he reached Baroda and met Aurobindo Ghosh for the first time. Ghose was highly impressed by the spirit of Jatindra and helped him to obtain a job in Baroda army. Thus he began his long term association with Aurobindo. He joined Anushilan Samity at Kolkata and very soon rose as a prominent member. His father got him married to divert him from ant-British activities. Yet Jatindra continued with his revolutionary activities.

After the suppression of revolutionary activities in Bengal, Jatin returned back to his hometown. His mind filled with spiritual thoughts and he regularly visited the temple of Bishalaakshi. He used to spend hours inside the temple. He started off searching for his guru and reached Varanasi where he was advised by a monk to go to Nainital. He found Soham Swami, his destined guru. Later he spent his entire life as a saint. He was a great exponent of Advaita Vedanta after Adi Shankara. The metamorphosis of both the revolutionary leaders - Jatindra Nath Banerjee and Aurobindo Ghosh is nothing short of a dramatic story.
