Nirad N. Mohapatra Biography

Nirad N. Mohapatra is an Indian film director of Oriya language known for making realistic movies, what we call parallel cinema. Maya Miriga was his first movie released in the year 1984. Many of his films have been shown in several international film festivals like Cannes Film Festival, London Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival and Los Angeles Film Festival and won many awards.

 

Nirad N. Mohapatra was born on 12 November 1947 and he hails from Bhadrak, Orissa. His father was a freedom fighter and journalist who later entered politics. His mother was a school teacher. He was also exposed to rural and urban life during childhood and teens. He was good student and wa sintersrted in subjects – history and literature. He was a good observer of human nature and human relationships too. He completed BA with honours in 1967. He enrolled for postgraduate studies in Political Science in Utkal University. But he quit studies due to his love to cinema. Instead he joined FTII Pune to study diploma in direction. In 1971, he graduated with a first class diploma in film direction and for the next three years he worked as faculty in FTII. Many great Indian directors were studying at FTII during this period.

 

Then till 1983, he successfully ran a Film society in Orissa. It was titled Cinexstasy was started at Bhuvaneswar to promote and popularize good movies. He also inspired a lot of students to join FTII to start a career in cinema. He edited the film section of a Film-cum-Literature journal Mana Phasal. At the same time, he worked as a guest lecturer in FTII. Maya Miriga in 1984 marked his debut as a film director which went on to receive many awards like second best National Film in 1984, Indian Panorama, Best Third World Film at International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg, Special jury award at Hawaii International Film Festival US and was selected for the 'Critics Week' of Cannes Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival and Los Angeles Film Festival. Later he concentrated on to documentary films. Currently, he teaches at the Film School of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar as a guest faculty.
