Nilu Phule Biography

Nilu Phule was a great actor of Marathi cinema and movies and always regarded as one of the finest artists of Marathi art and cinema. He has also acted in Hindi films and most associated with parallel cinema. He was also a social worker and was associated with Rashtra Seva Dal. He received Maharastra State Award for best actor for the movies - Haat lavin tithe sone (1973), Saamna (1974) and Choricha Mamla (1975) thus achieving a hat-trick. He has also received Kala Gaurav Puraskar. He played supporting roles in Hindi movies like Naram Garam, Mohre, Saaransh, Ek Hota Vidushak, Coolie and Mashaal.

 

Nilu Phule was born in 1930 in Pune in the clan of great social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. Nilu has been associated with India’s freedom struggle movement before joining movies. Phule's first job was that of a gardener at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune at the age of 17. He was associated with Rashtriya Seva Dal, a social organization during this time and used to donate 10 rupees from the monthly wages of 80 rupees. At the age of 20, inspired by the works of Tagore, he wrote his first drama, Udyan. Yedya Gabalache Kam Nahi of 1957 was the real breakthrough to his theatre career.

 

Nilu Phule began his theatrical career with the Marathi folk performances called loknatya. Katha Akalecha was his first professional drama which was a huge success. His first movie was Ek Gaav Baara Bhanagadi, released in 1968. Nilu portrayed negative roles most onscreen. A few of his noted roles include Sinhasan, Saraansh and Saamna. Vijay Tendulkar's Sakharam Binder is his most noted theatre work, where he played leading hero role. Nilu Phule died on 13 July 2009, aged 78, from esophageal cancer. Most recently when Forbes declared 25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian cinema, the list was completed with this legend’s name.
