Nikhil Kumar Biography

Nikhil Kumar is an Indian Police Officer, politician and former parliamentarian from Bihar. He was a member of 14th Lok Sabha representing Aurangabad constituency (2004 to 2009).  He is a member of Indian National Congress. After his tenure as MP, he served as the governor of two Indian states – Nagaland (2009-2013) and Kerala (2013-2014). Chief of the National Security Guards and Commissioner of Delhi Police are the other major positions held by him. He is the son of prominent politician and CM from Bihar, Satyendra Narayan Sinha, and the grandson of Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha, an Indian statesman who served as the first Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Bihar.

Nikhil Kumar was born on 15 July 1941 into a prominent political family of Bihar. His father Satyendra Narayan Sinha was a veteran congress leader from Bihar who served as a parliamentarian 7 times and also the CM of Bihar. His mother Kishori Sinha and wife Shyama Singh are also associated with politics. Both have served as parliamentarians also, representing Indian National Congress. His grandfather Anugrah Narayan Sinha was a prominent Congress leader in state politics. His brother-in-law N. K. Singh is a Rajya Sabha MP.

He joined IPS in 1963 from Delhi cadre after completing Master’s in Modern History. Since then he has served many prominent positions in Indian Police including Border Security Force and Commissioner of Police, Delhi. He retired as Director-General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police & National Security Guards in 2001. He received President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1985. He was also awarded with Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1977. After retirement he became active in politics and got elected to Lok Sabha in 2004. He later served as the Governor of Nagaland and Kerala too.
