Nikhil Baran Sengupta Biography

Nikhil Baran Sengupta is an art director of Oriya films, who is also known as an actor, painter and production designer. He died on 18 February 2014 in Bhubaneswar, after spending more than 4 decades in the film industry and he is known for promoting young talents to film world. He has also been associated with Hindi and Bengali movies. Mr. and Mrs. Iyer is his most noted work in Bollywood. Regarded as a pioneer of Oriya art industry, Janani, Sahari Bagha, Maa O Mamata, Suna Chadhei, Jugantar, Tahader Katha, Bagh Bahadur and Sahari Bagha are his best known works.

 

He was born in 1943 in Chittagong of present-day Bangladesh. His childhood was spent in Cuttack where he completed his school education. Later he joined Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata to study art. After graduation in 1969, he worked in advertising firms and also worked as illustrator of magazines. He also conducted a few painting exhibitions. But with his entry to film industry, he left behind all other interests and earned name as an art director. He has worked in more than 100 movies belonging to three Indian languages and worked with more than 35 film directors.

 

He debut Oriya film world with the first colour movie - Gapa Helebi Sata. He recived state award for best art direction three times. The movies are Janani, Hakim Baboo and Hisab Nikas. Janani was his big break to the industry and after that there was no turning back. He was married to Bijoya Sengupta and had two sons. He has also been honoured with Guru Kelu Charan award in the lifetime achievement in the year 2009.
