Nellikkal Muraleedharan Biography

Nellikkal Muraleedharan was a noted writer of Malayalam. He is well known as a poet who received the Kerala Sahitya Academi award for his poetry collection, Nellickal Muraleedharante Kavithakal in 2004. His book – Purappad earned him Edassery Memorial award in 1985. S.B.T award for 'Paandi’, Poonthanam award for poetry and K. C Chacko Award are the other major awards received by him. A study on his poems, authored by great writers of Malayalam was published as a book during his lifetime. ‘Sahitya Sabdakaram’ is one of the noted works which is treated as a reference book for literature students.

He was born in Nellickal of Pathanamthitta district on December 1, 1948 as the eldest son of T. Raghavan Pillai and P.P Thankamma. He schooled at different schools of Patanamthitta and showed inclination towards literature at an early age. His childhood days were spent near Pampa river and hence he has written many poems on river Pampa. He married Sukhada Devi K, with whom he had 3 daughters. He did Master of Arts in Malayalam from Mahatma Gandhi University and worked as a Lecturer in different colleges since 1977.

He was noticed as a modern poet and a noted name in the world of poems since early 1980’s. His poem 'Veedu' was one of his earliest works through which he got recognized. The first award came in the form of 'Edassery Award' in 1985 for his collection of poems - "Purappad". Viroopante Pattu, Atmapuranum, Kilivathil, Baligatha, Chitha Kadakunna Pakshikal, Bodhisatvante Jenmangal, Nagarapuranum, Sahitya Sabdakaram, 93 (Dictionary of literary terms), Nellickal Muraleedharante Kavithaakal, Nellickal Muraleedharante Kavithaakal - Volume 2, Veedu, Keralathile Jaathivyavstha, Aranmula Vallamkali and Vishwasaahithya darshanangal are other noted works.
