Neerja Pandit Biography

Neerja Pandit is a playback singer associated with Bollywood and Telugu films. She is also a live performer and a classical singer. She is married to noted filmmaker and social activist Ashoke Pandit since 1988. She has also sung for television soaps such as Sarhad and Tere Mere Sapne, for which she won Rapa Awards. She has also sung for many sitcoms for Indian television. Yeh Dil, Indian Babu, Sheen and Traffic Signal are among her noted Bollywood works. Associated with Kashmiri folk and Sufi music, she owns several super successful Kashmiri albums. Reshvaer, Kong Vaer, Cheshma bu Wondai, Yaadvotur, Patram Pushpam, Kashmiri Club Mix, Sangarmaal and Ruhaniyat are among her major hits.

 

Her maiden name is Neerja Munshi. She was born on 20 December 1966. She completed Master’s in music from Chandigarh University. She also got opportunity to learn Hindustani classic music from leading names such as Shambhunath Sopori, Bhajan Sopori, Shambhu Senji and Dhruba Ghosh. In 1988 she got married to filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and is quite active in singing field after her marriage. Though she couldn’t reach heights in Bollywood singing, she gained success through Kashmiri folk albums. Through her albums she attempted to link the new generation with the folklore of Kashmir.

 

She regularly sings title songs for television soaps. She sang title tracks for Doordarshan serials in the 1990s such as Gul Gulshan Gulfam, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Noorjehan etc. She also sang a few songs for ZEE television. In the 1990s she was featured in a remix album released by Venus. Regularly associated with live shows, she performs across the globe. The title track - "Bahut Khoobsurat Ho" for 1999 movie Khoobsurat, "Ek Mein Ek Tu" of Yeh Dil and Traffic Signal are among her popular Bollywood songs. In 2009 her album "Kong Vaer" was released at Radio Kashmir in Srinagar by none other than the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
