Nazim Panipati Biography

Nazim Panipati was a film lyricist and screenwriter associated with Hindi cinema in the first phase of talkies. He was associated with Indian and Pakistani entertainment industry, before and after partition respectively. Lata Mangeshkar’s first recorded song was written by Panipati. He contributed many hit songs to Hindi cinema in the 1940s before he migrated to Pakistan in 1952. After he moved to Pakistan, he was active in Pakistani cinema as well. Later he also worked with Pakistan Television Corporation, and wrote songs for a musical programme named Jhankar, which was extremely popular. He died in Lahore in 1998. He is also known for introducing many popular artists to Bollywood screen - Vyjayanthimala, Johnny Walker and Helen who later went on to become huge stars.

Nazim Panipati was born in 1920 in British India. His brother Mohammad Walli, known as Walli Sahib was a filmmaker. Nazim too have written scripts for Hindi cinema, apart from penning more than 200 songs. He wrote in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages. Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first song in the year 1948. The first song of her career – ‘Dil Mera Tora, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chora Tere Pyar Ne' from the film Majboor was penned by Nazim Panipati. The song was composed by legendary Ghulam Haider.

As a lyricist he started off in the early 1940s. Some of his early works include - Dulla Bhatti, Shirin Farhad, Yamla Jat, Khandan, Khazanchi, Naukar, Zamindar etc. Aai Hai Diiwaalii Sakhi Aai Sakhi Aai Re from Sheesh Mahal, Suno Suno Kaise Kah Doon Bajariyaa Ke Beech from Ladli, Dil Mera Tora, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chora Tere Pyar Ne from Majboor, Ham Hain Dukhiya Is Duniya mein from Jag Biti etc are some of his top songs. After migrating to Pakistan, he never returned to India. He passed away in Lahore in the year 1998.
