Navin Chawla Biography

Navin Chawla is a retired civil servant, and noted author too. He served as the Chief Election Commissioner of India, and was in office during 21 April 2009 – 29 July 2010 and conducted general elections of Lok Sabha. As a writer, he is best known for his authorized autobiography on Mother Teresa, published in 1992. The book titled Mother Teresa was a bestseller. He was so influenced by Mother Teresa that he decided to continue with the civil service, after her death as advised by her. Though he had a lean towards Congress political party, he didn’t show partiality towards the party in 2009 general elections, and took strict action against malpractices of Congress in many Indian states.

 

Navin Chawla was born on 30 July 1945 in New Delhi. His higher education was completed at University of Delhi, followed by London School of Economics in 1968. He joined Indian Administrative Service in 1969. He had a glorious career as an administrative officer, and rose to the highest rank of Additional Secretary and Secretary to the Government of India. Magistrate and Commissioner of the Union Territory of Delhi are other elite positions held by him during his civil service. He succeeded B. B. Tandon as Election Commissioner in 2005, and he was appointed as the 16th Chief Election Commissioner on 21 April 2009.

 

As a civil servant and administrator, he was mainly posted in Delhi, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry. During his tenure as Chief Election Commissioner, he brought in many reforms in election making process. He executed first four out of 5 phases of general elections of 2009. His autobiography on Mother Teresa has been translated into 14 languages.
