Narsingh Dev Jamwal Biography

Narsingh Dev Jamwal is an Indian Theatre Artist from Kashmir. He is a Dogri author and artist, who has won several honours and awards. A man of martial training, he has served with Kashmiri state police force too. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2018. He is also a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel in Dogri, Sanjhi Dharti Bakhle Mahnu in 1978. Jamwal has received Playscript Awards from the Jammu and Kashmir State Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages in 1967, 1973, and 1977, as well as Best Book Awards from the State Academy in 1972, 1989, 1993, and 1996. He is one of the well-recognized theatre personalities and authors from Kashmir.

 

Narsingh Dev Jamwal was born in 1931 in the village of Bhalwal in Jammu Tawi district of Jammu and Kashmir. He completed his Master’s degree in Dogri from Jammu University. He joined the Jammu & Kashmir State Forces in 1945, and worked with Jammu and Kashmir Police from 1953 to 1986. He retired as Deputy Superintendent of Police. Even while he was busy with his professional career as a rough policeman, he carried an artistic soul, and dedicated some time for theatre and writings as well.

 

Since the early 1960s, Shri Jamwal has pursued a parallel career in the Dogri theatre. He wrote plays, poetry etc and even made appearance on stage as an actor. He was fully engaged in amateur theatre belonging to Dogri language. Apart from some original plays, he also translated a few well-known works to his native language. Aan Maryada, Mandlik, Pinjra, Kaure Ghutt, Sarkar, and Devyani are among his famous plays, and he has also produced a few TV shows.
