Narla Venkateswara Rao Biography

Narla Venkateswara Rao was a Telugu writer, journalist and politician. He wrote many books in Telugu and also served as a Rajya Sabha member twice (1958-1970). He had two phases of career journey – first as a journalist and then as a traveller where he travelled overseas to many countries. He was a public speaker known for his orator skills, and contributed many plays as well, as a playwright. He also wrote many memoirs. He had been a conferred honorary doctorate by several universities. But he always kept a low profile and never flaunted such honours or achievements.

 

Narla Venkateshwara Rao or V. R. Narla was born on 1 December 1908 in a middle class agricultural family, and during his early years, he has faced many financial crises. His ancestors migrated from Andhra Pradesh to Madhya Pradesh as a part of their business and settled in Katni, and worked as contractors for the supply of food grains to the army. But Narla moved back to his hometown in Andhra Pradesh, where he got settled and completed his studies as well. Narla was also involved with freedom struggle movement during his younger years.

 

Since childhood he had a flair of writing, and later he chose journalism and writing as profession. It took only a short time for him to find his place among top journalists of the time. He served as the editor of Andhra Prabha, and many other Telugu publications. During Second World War as well as in the post- independence period, he was quite popular as a columnist over a wide range of topics. Later he entered politics and served as member of upper parliament during 3 April 1958 to 2 April 1970. He passed away on 13 March 1985.
