Narhar Ambadas Kurundkar Biography

Narhar Ambadas Kurundkar was a Marathi scholar, critic and writer who wrote on political philosophies in general. His works also include cultural matters and historical events in Maharashtra. His essay collections include – Roopawedh (1964), Jagar (1969), Shivaratra (1970), Payawat (1974), Chhhaya Prakash (1979), Bhajan (1981) and Akalan (1882). Dhar Ani Kath (1971) is his review of history of Marathi Novel. Aside Madhukar Deshpande, he has written commentary on Manusmriti. Chhatrapati Shiwaji Maharaj Jiwan Rahasya, Yatra, Olakh and Themb Attarache are other noted works. Numerous works have been published post humorously. Magova (1967) is the collection of essays on diverse topics, including Indian classical music, folk literature, Sanskrit literature, and Sankhya philosophy. His works carried the idea of supremacy of logical thinking.

 

Kurundkar was born on July 15, 1932 in the town of Nandapur of Marathwada region. He did degree at City College, Hyderabad. In his first two years in college, he frequently used to skip classes and go to library to read books related to history, Culture, Religion, Philosophy, Education, Literature, Politics, and Economics. He failed to pass the second-year college examination even after a few attempts and was not able to successfully complete the course. He kept socialist ideas in mind and became labour leader of the local rickshaw drivers' union and became an ardent member of Rashtra Seva Dal.

 

In 1955, he started his career as a teacher at Pratibha Niketan high school in Nanded. During this time he completed degree in Humanities and later earned master's degree from Marathwada University in the year 1963. He joined the faculty of People's College in Nanded as a professor of Marathi and later became the Principal. He continued with writing and Bertrand Russell was his role model. Kurundkar was a member of Maharashtra Government Literary Awards Committee. He died due to a heart attack while delivering a speech at Aurangabad in 1982.
