Narendra Singh Tomar Biography

Narendra Singh Tomar, nicknamed Munna Bhaiya is an Indian politician and Member of Parliament, who currently serves as a cabinet minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. He represents Gwalior constituency in LoK Sabha, got elected to parliament from Bharatiya Janata Party and he currently serves as Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Mines in the Government of India. He has earlier served as Minister of Steel during 2014-2016, Minister of Labour and Employment in 2014, and was given the additional charge of Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in 2017.

 

Narendra Singh Tomar was born on 12 June 1957 in Morena District of Madhya Pradesh. Orethi is the village in which he was born, and belongs to a Tomar Rajput family. His parents are Munshi Singh Tomar and Sharda Devi Tomar. He is married to Kiran Tomar, and has three children. Tomar completed his graduation from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. He joined active politics during his college days, and became the president of Bharatiya Janata Party Youth Forum (BJPYF), Gwalior in 1980, a position he held for next four years.

 

He also served as Councillor of Municipal Corporation, Gwalior; Pradesh Mantri, BJPYF, Madhya Pradesh and State Vice-President, BJPYF, Madhya Pradesh in the 1980s. He rose to prominence in the 1990s. He served as the State President of BJPYF during 1991-1996. He contested state assembly elections for the first time in 1998, and got elected. He retained the seat till 2008, winning for his second term too. During this term, he served as a cabinet minister during 2003-2007.

 

Since 2006, he serves as the president of BJP in Madhya Pradesh state. He served as a Rajya Sabha member for a brief period in 2009, and then got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time same year. In 2014, he got elected for the second time, and got opportunity to handle different portfolios in Narendra Modi’s ministry.
