Narendra Nath Sen Gupta Biography 
Narendra Nath Sen Gupta was a Bengali psychologist, philosopher, and professor he made valuable contributions in the field of psychology. He, along with Gunamudian David Boaz is recognized as the founder of modern psychology in India. Department of Experimental Psychology, Kolkata – the second one in the country was established by him in the year 1940.
Sen Gupta was born in Faridpur in 1889 to Turini Charan and Muktakeshi Sen Gupta. Since childhood he was interested in the practical applications of science rather than giving importance to its theoretic side. He completed Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College in 1913 and completed Master’s the following year with the help of a scholarship. He continued his training in psychology and obtained doctorate in philosophy from Harvard University in 1915. Once returned to India he joined as the lecturer of Department of Philosophy at the University of Calcutta. Very soon he was appointed as the chairman of newly established Department of Experimental Psychology. During this time, he started psychological researches.
With his efforts, psychology was included as a distinct division in the Indian Science Congress in 1923 and appointed as its president in 1925. With his efforts, Indian Psychological Association was founded in 1924 and started the magazine, Indian Journal of Psychology in 1925. He served as its editor too. In 1928, he joined University of Kolkata and co-authored the book, ‘Introduction to Social Psychology: Mind in Society’. It was one of the first Indian books on social psychology. He was appointed Professor of Philosophy in 1929. Mental Growth and Decay and Heredity in Mental Traits are the books published during this time.
