Narendra Bedi Biography

Narendra Bedi was a prominent filmmaker of Bollywood cinema in the 1970s and early 1980s who has delivered many musical blockbusters like Jawani Diwani, Bandhan, Rafoo Chakkar, Adalat, Sanam Teri Kasam and Maha Chor. He frequently worked with Rajesh Khanna, and delivered two hits with the first superstar of Indian cinema, Bandhan and Maha Chor, and also two hits with Amitabh Bachchan, Benaam and Adalat. He delivered one hit with Rishi Kapoor - Rafoo Chakkar, and one hit with Kamal Hassan, Sanam Teri Kasam, his last release. He frequently collaborated with music composer R. D. Burman for his works, and also his last film, Sanam Teri Kasam gave the first Filmfare award for its composer. Sadly, Narendra Bedi couldn’t see the success of his last film, Sanam Teri Kasam. The movie was released posthumously in 1982.

Narendra Bedi was born in 1932 in Mumbai. He is the son of famous Urdu writer, and screenwriter Rajinder Singh Bedi. His son Rajat Bedi is also a well-known Bollywood actor, best known for supporting roles. His daughter Ila Bedi Dutta is a screenwriter. After completing his graduation, Narendra Bedi joined Bollywood film industry as an assistant writer and director of G. P. Sippy’s production house. As a filmmaker his first release was Bandhan (1969), starring Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. It was the same year when Rajesh Khanna’s Aradhana swept the whole nation, and he turned a superstar. Bandhan is counted among the 17 consecutive hit films of Rajesh Khanna between 1969 and 1971 as a solo hero.

Narendra Bedi went on to direct many super hit movies, mostly belonging to romantic and comedy genres. Jawani Diwani starring Jaya Badhuri and Randhir Kapoor is one of the biggest hits of his career. His songs composed by R. D. Burman also topped the musical charts in the 1970s and 1980s. Except his three releases, Dil Diwana, Kacche Heere and Aakhri Sangarsh, he tasted success with his all other releases.
