Narayan Shridhar Bendre Biography

Narayan Shridhar Bendre was a celebrated artist of 20th century, who lived during the period - August 21, 1910 – February 19, 1992. He was a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions during his life time including Padma Shri in 1969 and Padma Bhushan in 1992. He got his first recognition in the year 1955 through his work, Thorn, which earned him Lalit Kala Akademi award. Madhya Pradesh state government conferred him the Kalidas Samman in 1987-1988. "The Bullock Cart", "The Sunflower", "Hairdo", “Monkey” and “The Female Cowherd" are among his prominent works.

 

He was born at Indore in 1910. He completed graduation from Agra University in 1933 and did a one-year diploma course in Painting from the State School of Art, Indore. Till late 1930s he worked as a painter and journalist for the government of Kashmir, and during this period he made sketches of beautiful Kashmir valley. Then he moved to Mumbai and worked as a freelancer. Apart from paintings, he made portraits and mural paintings. While working in Chennai as art director, he came close to Mona and got married in 1942.

 

In 1945 he joined Shantiniketan and five years later he joined Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara. When he left Vadodara in 1966, he served as the Dean of the faculty. Apart from his contributions to art, he has always worked for the underprivileged people. When the first Janta Library was inaugurated in Delhi, he contributed accordingly. A master of colours and composer, he excelled as a landscapist. He was influenced by miniature painting. He introduced many innovative ideas to the art. During the independence period, 1946-1947, he visited many foreign countries and learnt more about modern art. He passed away in 1962.
