Narayan Sanyal Biography

Narayan Sanyal was a noted writer associated with Bengali modern literature. His novels are quite popular. Aporupa Ajanta in 1969 earned him Rabindra Puraskar. He received Bankim Puraskar for Rupmanjari in 2000, and is also a recipient of Narasingha Dutta Award. Many of his stories have been adapted as screenplays for Bengali movies. The movie Satyakaam earned him best story writer award at Bengal Film Journalists award. The plot of the film Ashleelotar Daye was driven from a work of Sanyal with the same title. His novel Nagchampa was made to the film Jodi Jantem, while Neelimay Neel and Pashando Pandit were made to feature films with same title. He has also contributed to children and teenage literature, apart from many other genres of literature. Ami Narayan Sanyal Ke Dekhechi – is his biography written by Pradip Dutta.

He was born in Kolkata on 26 April 1924. Chittasukh Sanyal and Basantalata Devi were his parents. His wife’s name was Sabita Sanyal and the couple had two daughters and one son. He was a civil engineer by profession. Yet he was fully active in his literal career too. After completing civil engineering from Bengal Engineering College in 1948, he started his career with PWD department, followed by National Buildings Organisation. He authored the book - Vaastu Vigyanon Civil engineering.

Narayan Sanyal explored with different subjects for doing his literal works. Apart from children’s books and novels, he has also written non-fiction works such as travelogues, science, art and architecture, history, current affairs etc. Nakshatraloker Debatatma is his popular science fiction work. His most popular work is Biswasghatak. He also wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta, inspired from several foreign works. Bishupal Bodh: Uposonghar is his completion of the detective work (Byomkesh Bakshi) - Bishupal Bodh.
