Nandita Roy Biography

Nandita Roy is a film maker and screenwriter associated with Bengali cinema. She has been associated with Shiboprosad Mukherjee for many projects as a film director and producer. The duo has directed many Bengali movies successfully. She is also a screenwriter. Bela Seshe, Icche, Muktodhara, Accident, Alik Sukh and Ramdhanu are the best movies directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. All these movies have met with critical and commercial success in the recent times. Icche – was their debut flick released in 2011, which was a box office hit and earned them critical fame.

 

She was born in Mumbai on 3 April 1955. Her teens and childhood days were spent in Mumbai where she studied till graduation. She completed graduation in Economics from Parle College and worked as a teacher for a while before she pursued her Master’s degree. She married national award winning art director Nitish Roy in 1977 and later settled in West Bengal. Obviously she also got attached to the entertainment world of cinema.

 

Roy began her professional career in 1978, when she co-directed a short puppet film for children, named 'Agadoom-Bagadoom'. Then throughout 1980s and 1990s she worked as an assistant director under Nitish Mukherjee, Mrinal Sen, Govind Nihalani etc for films and television shows. She also assisted her husband Nitish Roy in the art department as a set dresser, apart from assisting him in movie direction. She was also associated with ETV Bangla as Creative and Administrative Manager.

 

She along with Shiboprosad Mukherjee started a production house WINDOWS Productions under which they directed many movies, apart from television shows. They together form a successful duo directors who produce movies with earn both critical fame and commercial success. Bela Seshe released in English in 2015 is their latest release. The movie brought the iconic pair of Bengali screen - Soumitra Chatterjee and Swatilekha Sengupta after a big gap of 30 years.
