Nandini Mundkur Biography

Nandini Mundkur is one of the leading paediatricians of the country. She is associated with Developmental Paediatrics and specialized in Developmental Disorders. A phenomenal woman in the field of Autism, she is a recipient of numerous honours in the field of medicine which include - Manthan Asia award in 2008, Rotary Excellence Award in 1998, Ashoka Fellowship Award in 1986 and Sathya Gupta Award in 1978. She is a pioneer in the field of early detection and intervention services for developmental disorders.

 

She was born in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu in 1949. Her dad was a wing commander in the Indian Air Force, and she spent a lot of time in travelling since her childhood, because of the nature of her father’s job. She grew up with 2 sisters and a brother. She spent most of her academic years in Delhi, where she completed medical studies. She completed her MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College in 1972 and MD in Paediatrics in 1977. Since early years of her practice, she showed special interest in the field of developmental studies. She got married to a service officer from Karnataka at the age of 21, and had two daughters.  

 

She was not a doctor when she got married, and her husband fully supported in her medical studies and career. She had her first child when she was just an intern. Her parents were extremely supportive as well. She later worked at Bangalore children’s hospital and founded the Centre for Child Development and Disabilities. In 1989, she did a course at Vojta’s Early Diagnosis and Therapy, and from there on, marked her successful beginning as a paediatrician. She serves as the director of Sackhumvit Trust now, and currently practises in Bangalore.
