Nandikolla Gopala Rao, also known as N. Gopala Rao is renowned artist from Andhra Pradesh during British rule. He is known as Father of Modern Contemporary Art in Andhra Pradesh. His paintings were widely recognized, partly among rajas of princely states of early 20th century and he mostly portrayed Hindu epics, landscapes and portraits of members of Royal families. He introduced many innovative ideas to Indian paintings and still now they are relevant too. The very first ‘Pendal’ (cinema theatre) of this artist was inaugurated at Kakinada. It was a period there when he was invited to the courts of Rajas to make their portraits. He has also made portraits of queens.

He was born in 1880 in Cocanada of Andhra Pradesh in a wealthy family of Zamindars. He was a self-taught artist and started painting at the age of 13. N. Venkata Reddi Naidu, a landscape and portrait painter was his brother. During the British rule Gopala Rao was the Munsiff for Injiram. He got married to Surnarayanama. It was a time when Indian artists were not given enough recognition under British rule and Indian artists received only less opportunity too.
