Namvar Singh Biography

Namvar Singh is an Indian writer who writes in Hindi language. He is best known as a progressive literary critic, apart from being a scholar, linguist, academician and theoretician. He is one of the foremost disciples of Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, under whom Singh did his research work to complete PhD. Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971, Shalaka Samman in 1991, Sahitya Bhushan Samman and Kuvempu Rashtreeya Puraskar are some of the major honours received by him. As a writer, Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman, Chhayavaad and Dusari Parampara Ki Khoj are his major works.

 

Namvar Singh was born on 28 July 1926 in Jiyanpur, Azamgarh District, of present day Uttar Pradesh. Noted writer Kashinath Singh is his younger brother. His early education was completed from his village, and then moved to Varanasi for higher studies where he studied at Udai Pratap Autonomous College and Banaras Hindu University. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. Then he started his professional career as a lecturer at BHU. Following a controversy he left the university, and later taught at Sagar University, Jodhpur University and finally Jawaharlal Nehru University where he taught till his retirement in 1992. He created a new pattern of teaching and preparing of curriculum in JNU.

 

Apart from being an academician, he is a well-known literary critic who authored more than a dozen of books. Most of his works belong to non-fiction category. Some of his published works include - Vaad Vivaad Samvaad, Kahaani Nai Kahaani, Itihaas Aur Alochana, Baklam Khud, Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman, Chhayavaad, Dusari Adhunik Sahitya Ki Pravrittyan, Prithviraj Raso Ki Bhasha, Parampara Ki khoj and Hindi Ke Vikas Me Apbhramsha Ka yogdaan. He also served as an editor for a few magazines. After retirement Singh was appointed as Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, and also Chairman of Raja Ramnohun Roy Library Foundation.
