Nallakannu Biography

Nallakannu is one of the senior leaders of the Communist Party of India and served as the State Secretary of Tamil Nadu wing of the Communist Party of India. He was born on 26th December 1925 in Thiruvaikundam village of Thoothukudi District. His parents are Ramasamy and Karuppayi. His wife’s name is Ranjitham and he did a revolution in his days through his inter caste marriage.

 

He formed farmers’ associations in his younger days. At that time there were not much transport facilities and he walked from Vadakarai to Valliyur and all over the villages of Nanguneri to form these associations. He fought against the domination of temple authorities to assert the rights of the poor and backward farmers. He is against the caste system and had spent his days in prison many times. Also he is very simple and pure in his looks and attitudes.

 

He was a student of C. Lakkuvanaar, the famous Tamil scholar and is a good friend of scholar Mu. Varadharasan. Nallakannu is also a writer and has deep interest in literature. He has written many books in Tamil language including The Views of Dr. Ambedkar, Water Resources of Tamil Nadu, Venmani Thiyagigal Kavithai and Part of Communists in Industrialization and also has translated many books into Tamil.

 

He contested in the assembly election from Coimbatore constituency in 1999 and was defeated by CP Radhakrishnan. He has received Ambedkar award from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Gandhi Award from Gandhi Social Welfare Forum. He received Sahayogi Puraskar award from Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on 14th August 2007 and Jeeva Award from District Writers Association on 21st January 2009.
