Nakkeeran Gopal Biography

Nakkeeran Gopal is a veteran and prominent journalist from Tamil Nadu, who is best known as the editor and publisher of Tamil political investigative journal Nakkheeran. Hence Nakkeeran is prefixed to his name. Gopal penned a series called "Challenge" (late 1990s) and Yutham (late 2000s) in his magazine, which was later complied and released as a book. His name is always counted among top and influential journalists and publishers of Tamil Nadu in the past few decades. He is a recipient of Thanthai Periyar Award for his contributions towards the field of news media.

 

Nakkheeran Gopal was born on 10 April 1959 in Aruppukottai of Virudhnagar District, Tamil Nadu. His birth name is Rajagopal. His childhood was spent in his village, where he completed his schooling. Later he completed his graduation from Saiva Bhanu Kshatriya College in 1977. He was also interested in sports then, and was a team member of his college hockey team. He was also involved with art and cultural activities of his college. His father wanted him to work in bank, while impatient Gopal worked in a provisional store much to his father’s displeasure.

 

In 1978 he moved to Chennai to get a job recommended by a relative. In 1983, Rajagopal and his friend jointly started a rubber firm. But this venture was unsuccessful. His efficiency was identified by Valampuri John, the editor of Thai magazine run by the then CM M.G.R in the mid-1980s. It proved to be a turning point of his life, and later he went on to become a successful journalist. He started his own political investigative weekly magazine in 1988 and named it Nakkheeran. It turned to be a major success and Gopal turned a successful journalist and publisher.
