Nagindas Parekh Biography

Nagindas Parekh was a famous literal, editor and critic associated with Gujarati language. He heavily contributed by translating works in Gujarati. His major translations include many Bengali works, apart from English and Sanskrit works. Many of those works belong to Tagore. Hindustani Vyakaran Pravesh (1947) is his work of Indian grammar.

 

Apart from translations, he has also published biographies and critic books. Parichay ane Pariksha, Swadhyay ane Samiksha, Crocenu Esthetic ane Bija Lekho, Abhinavno Rasvichar Bija Lekho and Viksha ane Niriksha are his major critic works.  Navalram, Mahadev Desai, Premanand, Gandhiji and Saat Charitro are his biography works. In 1970, he received Sahitya Akademi Award for his work - Abhinavno Rasvichar. He was also a recipient of Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak for the year 1990.

 

His full name is Nagindas Narandas Parekh. He was born on 8 August 1903 in Bulsar of Gujarat in the British India. After school education from his hometown Valsad, he graduated from Gujarat Vidyapith in 1921. After spending four more years in studies in Gujarat College, he joined Vishwabharati, West Bengal for higher studies in 1925, where he got opportunity to learn Tagore’s literature under the guidance of Kshitimohan Sen. Since 1926, he taught at various educational institutions till his retirement in 1969 from H K Arts College, Ahmedabad.

 

He has given some outstanding contributions as a translator to the field of Gujarati literature. His career as a translator started in the early 1930s. He heavily translated Rabindranath Tagore’s books to Gujarati which include - Geetanjali ane Bija Kavyo, Poorva ane Paschim, Visarjan, Poojarini ane Dakghar, Vishwaparichay, Poojarini ane Dakghar etc. He also co-translated some more works of Tagore. Dilipkumar Roy, Surendranath Dasgupta and Maitreyi Devi are other noted writers whose works have been translated to Gujarati by Parekh.
