N. Sundaran Nadar Biography

Sundaran Nadar was a senior congress leader of Kerala. He hails from Chenkal of Thiruvananthapuram district. He has been elected to Kerala State Legislative Assembly four times and has decorated the positions of Kerala Transport Minister, Agriculture minister as well as Deputy Speaker. His name is always counted among the top congress leaders from South Kerala and often regarded as the most popular congress leader from Parassala and Neyyattinkara Constituents. He is the most successful politician from south Kerala too and one among those reputed leaders of Kerala without any false blames of corruptions. He has served in many roles under the rule of senior congress leader K.Karunakaran.

 

N.Sundaran Nadar was born in Chenkal Parassala as the son of Shri J. Nallathampy Nadar and Smt. Lekshmi on 10 September 1931. He was a graduate in BL and politics was in his blood during his college days. He was a Grama Sevak during 1954. But he resigned his job in 1960 and joined Communist party of India later. He was a member of Communist party will 1964.

 

Later he joined congress party and he was immensely popular among the leaders as well as mass. He has served as Chair person of KELPAM (1993 to 1996), Vice President, District Congress committee, K.P.C.C (1987-90) and Executive Member, thus decorating higher designations of Congress part in the state. He was the chairman of block committee for more than 10 years since 1970. He was most engaged in politics during 1980’s and was repeatedly elected to Kerala state legislative assembly.   

 

He has been elected to KLA four times - 1980, 1982, 1996 and 2001 and all those times, he attempted from Parassala. However, he couldn’t win the elections last time in 2006 and got defeated by Selva Raj and one year later, he died in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College due to heart failure. As a minister, he has served the state as Minister for Transport, Rural Development and Agriculture from September 1, 1983 to March 25, 1987. When he was elected for the last time in 2001, he was given Deputy Speaker position.

 

Now the significant story about his win in the year 1996. Though he has been elected from Congress party repeatedly, as promised, he was not given a seat in the year 1996. Everyone believed that it’s the end of the political career of this popular leader. But he contestant as independent candidate and without any political support, he won the seat defeating both Congress and Communist parties. His win over both the leading parties of the state without the support of any other group was a great surprise pack in the political history of Kerala, perhaps an incident that occurred for the first time in Kerala. This shows the popularity of this leader among the masses.

 

So, without any hesitation, Congress offered him a seat during next elections of 2001 and won it too, to become Deputy Speaker of Kerala. In 2006 also, he contested but couldn’t win it. He died in the following year. He was married to Baby Sarojam and has three children. Elder child is a girl and twin boys. Most recently, eldest of the twin brothers died due to a heart attack in his middle ages! In 2007, a statue of Sundaran Nadar was inaugurated at the traffic island of Neyyattinkara main town.
