N. Rangaswamy Biography

Rangaswamy is an Indian politician from Union Territory of Pondicherry, who served as its chief minister three times, and also did a hat-trick. He became the chief minister for the first time in 2001, he retained his power in the next state assembly elections in 2006 and for the last time as its ninth chief minister during the period, 16 May 2011 – 6 June 2016, thus completing a hat-trick completing 5-year term every time. He remains a favourite candidate of Thattanchavadi constituency, from where he regularly contests.

 

For the last time only, he represented All India NR Congress party. He was affiliated to Indian National Congress from 1990 to 2011, before he formed his own party and contested in state assembly elections. Nicknamed living Junior Kamaraj, he is a very influential leader among the masses. He was elected from Thattanchavady assembly constituency for state assembly elections 4 times. Rangaswamy resigned as Chief Minister on 28 August 2008, and started a new political party called All India NR Congress and won the state elections.

 

N Rangasamy was born on 4 August 1950 in Puducherry into a Tamil family. His parents are Nadesan Krishnasamy and Panchali. After completing his graduation in commerce at Tagore Arts College, he pursued law studies. He was associated with Indian National Congress during his first phase of active politics. He contested state assembly elections for the first time in 1991 from Thattanchavadi and got elected also. He joined state cabinet and served as agriculture minister of Pondicherry.

 

After that he successfully contested 4 more times in state assembly elections, three more times from Thattanchavadi and the final one from Thattanchavadi. During his second term as MLA, he served as Education Minister, and for the rest three full terms since 2000, he served as state’s chief minister.  As a chief minister, he is best known for educational reforms in school sector. His welfare schemes include distribution of free wheat to poor diabetic patients above 60.
