N. Mathrubootham Biography

N. Mathrubootham was an Indian psychiatrist and doctor, known for his work on sex education. He was also a writer and cine personality, known as a film director, actor and comedian. He has played supporting and comic roles in a few Tamil films towards the end of his life, and it also includes cameo roles of professor or doctor. He was seen in brief roles in Tamil films – Whistle, Shahjahan, Thullal, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Vaali, Pennin Manathai Thottu etc, and also conducted sex education discussions on Tamil television.

 

N. Mathrubootham was born on 2 July 1944 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. His early days were spent in his hometown where he completed his school education. Later he moved to Chennai in the 1960s, where he completed his M. B. B. S. degree from the Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1966. Later he pursued a doctorate in psychiatry, and after obtaining it, he joined Institute of Mental Health, Chennai as a lecturer. Over the years he became Professor of Psychiatry with the same medical institute and later he worked with Kilpauk Medical College also.

 

Over the years he did several research works and earned accolades for his contributions towards the field of sex education, alcohol addiction and others. He also received Pinnacle award for his multilingual sex education film Puthira Punithama. A noted psychiatrist, he was more popular in his circle for his ability to crack jokes and his inimitable witty remarks. He believed that even the risk of heart attack is minimized in a person, who laughs well. Mathrubootham suffered from arthritis and renal diseases in his late 50s, and passed away in 2004 following a cardiac arrest at the age of 60.
