N. Chandra Biography

N. Chandra is a Bollywood director most known for directing 1988 blockbuster, Tezaab which placed Madhuri Dixit as the number 1 actress of Bollywood. The song ‘Ek do teen’ was the highlight of the movie. This producer, writer and director is known for his dark and loud films like Ankush, Pratighaat, Tezaab and Narasimha. Yet he has made light hearted comedy films like Style and its sequel, Xcuse me and both these movies were box office hits. Narasimha marked the career beginning of actress Urmila Matondkar. Though Madhuri Dixit had already entered Bollywood industry, it was the movie, Tezaab which brought her instant stardom and there was no turning back later.

 

N. Chandra’s full name is Chandrashekhar Narvekar. He was born on 4 April 1952 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He made his directorial debut with Angush in 1986. This movie plotted Nana Patekar as an angry young man and Chandra produced, edited and scripted the movie as well. In 1987, his second movie – Pratighaat was released. It was the remake of Telugu flick "Pratighatana" and the movie starred Sujata Mehta and Nana Patekar in lead roles. The movie showed some black colours of Indian politics. In 1988, his third movie, Tezaab starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit was released. This movie effectively launched Madhuri Dixit's career as well as presented a successful Jodi to Bollywood – Anil Kapoor & Madhuri Dixit.

 

Tejaswini – released in 1994 is another noted work of Chandra. The movie starred Deepak Malhotra and Vijaya Shanti in lead roles and is based on the real life of police officer, Kiran bedi. Wajood (1998) starring Madhuri Dixit in lead role and Shikari (2000) are other noted releases. His last directorial venture was Y.M.I : Yeh Mera India, released in 2009.
