N. Biren Singh Biography

N. Biren Singh is an Indian politician who currently serves as Chief Minister of Manipur. He is a former footballer and journalist. A member of Bharatiya Janata Party, he swore as Chief Minister of Manipur on 15 March 2017. He has played football matches in domestic competitions while he was working with Border Security Force. He resigned from the BSF and turned to journalism and began the vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 and worked as the editor till 2001. After that he joined politics and Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party. He also had a brief stint with Indian National Congress before he joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016.

N. Biren Singh was born in Imphal East, Manipur on the New Year day of 1961. Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai is his hometown. After his studies, he started his career as a footballer and got recruited in the Border Security Force. In fact he was spotted by BSF after watching him in a football match. He was associated with several domestic football matches of BSF till he resigned in 1982. He is the first Manipuri footballer to play outside the state. He was also a part of the BSF team which won the 1981 Durand Cup defeating the famous and prominent team Mohun Bagan.

Singh played football another 10 years in the Manipur state team. He didn’t have any previous experience with journalism field. Yet he started a daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 which turned successful. He was only 29 then. In 2000, he was jailed on charges of sedition, for publishing an activist's speech, who was accused of supporting extremist groups. He was associated with journalism for a decade till he joined politics in 2002, as a member of Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party. He changed his political parties in between and finally settled with BJP in 2016.
