Muzaffar Ali Biography

Muzaffar Ali is an Indian artist, painter, leading fashion designer and film personality. He is a film director, poet and social worker also. As a film celebrity, he has given Bollywood a handful of films. But he is better known as the film maker of Rekha starrer Bollywood classic movie, Umrao Jaan (1981). The movie gave both Rekha and Asha Bhosle National awards. Awad, Congregation, Anjuman and Gaman are his other noted Bollywood works. In his opinion, Bollywood should be global. He is a recipient of Padma Shri in the year 2005. Zooni starring Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia was his dream project, which was never released.

 

He was born in Lucknow, British India on 21 September 1944. He was born in a royal Muslim Rajput family of Kotwara. His father was the Raja of Kotwara. Ali completed his graduation from La Martiniere College. Ali was first married to Subhashini Ali, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and daughter of Colonel Prem Sehgal and Captain Lakshmi Sehgal. Famous young Film director, Shaad Ali known for movies Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli is their son. But the couple separated and Ali later married Mira, who is 20 years younger to him. They worked together for a small film on Sufism when they came close. They work together on costume designing and sketches. Ali has married thrice.

 

Ali immortalized the beauty of Rekha through Bollywood historic classic, Umrao Jaan. Though J. P. Dutta attempted to create the same magic onscreen using another beauty queen, Aishwarya Rai in 2006, he was not able to reach the heights which Ali has done 25 years ago. In many means both these movies were compared. Apart from movies, Ali has also directed a few documentaries and short films.
