Murasoli Maran Biography

Murasoli Maran was a well-known politician, journalist, writer and screenwriter from Tamil Nadu. He was a prominent political figure from Tamil Nadu, who lived during the period, 17 August 1935 – 24 November 2003. As a politician he is best remembered for his association with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, originally formed by his uncle and mentor M. Karunanidhi. Murasoli Maran served as the Member of Parliament for long 36 years and has served as a Union Minister twice.  He wrote screenplay and dialogues for more than twenty films in Tamil, produced five and directed two films. Government of Tamil Nadu has honoured him with Kalaimamani award for his contributions towards arts.

Murasoli Maran was born into a family of artists, literals and politicians. His family is one of the most influential political families of India, with many members strongly linked with politics and serving cabinet positions in central government. His mother is Karunanidhi’s sister. Thus he is the nephew of Karunanidhi. His children - Kalanidhi Maran is a media personality while Dayanidhi Maran is a prominent figure in politics. Actor Muthu, and politicians - M. K. Alagiri and M. K. Stalin are his cousins. There are many more celebrities in his family, related to the world of art and politics.

Murasoli Maran was born on 17 August 1934 as the son of Shanmuga Sundaram. Thirukkuvalai village of Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu is his birth place. He worked as a journalist and social worker before he turned active in politics. He completed his law studies from Law College, Madras. Since college days he was associated with DMK. In 1965 he got arrested during anti-Hindi agitations for the articles he wrote. During Emergency period too, he was detained for a year.
