Murali. G Biography

Murali. G is a National award winning cinematographer associated with feature films and short films. In 2010 his maiden work - Shyam Raat Seher won National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Cinematography. The film was shot in Hindi and English. Murali is currently in spotlight for being associated with megastar Rajinikanth for his recent two releases – Kabali and Kala, and both emerged as box office hits. He marked his feature film debut with Hanu Raghavapudi’s directorial debut, Andala Rakshasi, a Telugu film in 2012. His maiden project in Tamil, Madras won SIIMA Award for Best Tamil Cinematographer. As of now, he has done 4 feature films in south Indian cinema.

His full name is Uthangarai Murali G. He hails from the village of Uthangarai, which is now a part of Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu. He spent his childhood days in his hometown where he completed his schooling. He has been a social worker and associated with the political activities of Communist party of India as a part of student politics during his academic years. He completed his graduation from Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, and later enrolled at the very prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, Pune where he specialized in motion picture photography.

After completion of his course at FTII, he started off as an assistant director in film and ad industry in the late 2000s. He worked as an assistant under the acclaimed cinematographer and director Rajeev Ravi for the critically acclaimed film, Dev D in 2009. After working in an industry for a couple of years as an assistant, he marked his debut with Telugu project, Andala Rakshasi in 2012. In between he also worked with one short film, Shyam Raat Seher, which bagged him the prestigious National award.
