Muhammad Ahsan Dar Biography

Muhammad Ahsan Dar is the founder of of the militant group of Kashmir, Hizbul Mujahideen whose intensions is to separate Kashmir from Indian geography. It was founded in the year 1989 and designated as a terrorist organisation by India, US and European Union. Dar also founded the Muslim Mujahideen in 1992. A former school master who joined militancy, he is a separatist leader now, who demands separation of Kashmir from India. As he has been a school teacher, he is also addressed by ‘Master’ by his followers.

 

Muhammad Ahsan Dar was born in 1960 in Sariwarpora Pattan of Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. He crossed Azad Jammu and Kashmir, controlled by Pakistan twice in 1984 and 1988 in a bid to get arms training. After the training was completed, he returned back to India. Though he got arrested in India, he managed to escape from hospital. He crossed LOC for the third time in 1989 but was brought back, following which he joined Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. Same year he split from the group to form a pro-Pakistan group Hizbul Mujahideen on 15 September 1989. Abdul Wahid Sheikh of Beerwah was its co-founder. Dar also became the chief commander of the militant group which aimed to free Kashmir from India.

 

Though Hizbul had no official support from Jamaat-e-Islami, Dhar is affiliated to this organization. In year 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the "sword arm of Jamaat". Sayeed Salahudeen started taking over the leadership of Hizbul. Dar was later disillusioned by Hizbul Mujahideen’s actions of killing members of other militant organizations. He was expelled by Salahudeen loyalists in 1991. He was arrested in 1992, and got released in 1999. In 2009 he got arrested again and was released in 2012.
