Moushumi Bhowmik Biography

Moushumi Bhowmik is a Bengali singer and songwriter. Her songs are categorized under ‘modern music’. She is popular among Bengali speaking people, both in India and Bangladesh, and her popular works are "Ekhono golpo lekho” and "Ami ghor bahir kori”. A singer of original, traditional and folk songs in concerts, Moushumi’s voice, ranging from subtle, lilting nuances to rich compelling vibrance, is an electrifying experience. She was born in Kolkata in 1964. She formed a band named Parapar in 2002, and it included artists from Bengal and London. Apart from Moushumi's own compositions the band also performs songs which exhibit the rich folk heritage of Bengal. It also follows diverse musical traditions. Oliver Weeks in Guitar, Ros Acton in Cello, Ben Hillyard in Bass, Derek Scurll in Drums and Satyaki Banerjee in Dotara are the band members.

 

She started the big task of recording and documenting the rich and varied tradition of folk music in West Bengal and Bangladesh in 2003, and till now continuing the task. She has researched, collected and documented many unfamiliar folk songs. It was listed on a website and includes the efforts of recording engineer Sukanta Majumdar.

 

Her popular song Amar Bahri Kothai is described to be a result of her confusion after having lived in many cities, personalising her experiences to audience. She has also composed music for a few Indian Bengali and Bangladeshi films such as Matir Moina, Ami Ghor Bahir Kori, Tumi Cheel Hao, Ekhono Golpo Lekho etc.
