Motilal Vora Biography

Motilal Vora is an Indian politician from Madhya Pradesh, who has served as Chief Minister of the state for two terms, 1985-1988 and 1989. He resigned his post as Chief Minister in 1988 to join Rajya Sabha. He belongs to Indian National Congress. He also served as governor of Uttar Pradesh during the period - 1993-1996. Vora is also a journalist who has worked with many daily newspapers during his early days. Vora is very close to High Command of Indian National Congress and supported nomination of Rahul Gandhi as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate. He also served as the treasury of All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Motilal Vora was born on 20 December 1928 in Jodhpur State in British India. Mohanlal Vora and Amba Bai were his parents. His ancestors belong to Phalaudi of present day Jodhpur, Rajasthan state. Vora completed his education from Raipur and Kolkata and worked with many newspapers for several years before he got actively involved in state politics. He got married to Shanti Devi Vora and the couple had 6 children.

He got involved with active politics in the late 1960s, when he got elected to Municipal Committee of Durg in 1968. In those days Durg belonged to Madhya Pradesh, and later he got associated with Madhya Pradesh state politics. He got elected to Madhya Pradesh state assembly for the first time in 1972. He got successfully elected to Vidhan sabha for the years 1977 and 1980 also, and joined Arjun Singh's Cabinet.

As a cabinet minister he held the portfolios of Higher Education, Road transport etc. Vora was appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for the first time in 1985. After a brief stint in national politics, he returned back to state politics. He served as Union Minister of Health, Family Welfare and Civil Aviation in 1988.
