Moolchand Biography

Moolchand was a character artist associated with Bollywood cinema. He was active in the classic era of 1960s and 1970s, and has appeared in brief roles in a few movies. He is known for his fat nature, big stomach and some hilarious scenes, mostly slapstick comedy. But he has done only less meaty roles throughout his film career. He gained initial recognition playing Om Prakash’s servant in Bollywood classic comedy of 1960s - Padosan. He was hilarious in family entertainer Yaadon Ki Baarat, where he was seen with fellow fatman Ram Avtar. As a fat character, he dances with Zeenat Aman and Amitabh Bachchan in the very iconic - Khaike Paan Banaraswala song in Don released in 1978.

This prolific actor has appeared in a few Punjabi movies also, apart from Hindi films. He was first seen in a 1950s Hindi film. He regularly featured in movies directed by greatest filmmakers, Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor, working in their 6 and 8 films respectively. He also worked with Dev Anand, B. R. Chopra, Dara Singh and I. S. Johar for their production ventures. In the 1950s he mostly played bit roles, and majority of them went unnoticed. In the 1960s too, he got only a few good character roles such as Padosan. He got a full-fledged comic role in the film as Om Prakash’s servant and was seen in several scenes of the film throughout.

In the 1970s too, film directors mostly explored his comic talents and made use of his fat body and stomach in the film scenes. But sadly he got similar kind of character and comic roles, and got type casted too. He played a tortured businessman in Yaadon Ki Baarat – one of his noted roles in 1970s. He died in the 1980s, and the movie Tamacha was released posthumously.
