Moola Narayana Swamy Biography

Moola Narayana Swamy was a south Indian film producer who founded Vauhini Studios, which gave many commercial hits in the classic era, and was considered as one of the largest production companies in South Asia. Later B. Nagi Reddy acquired Vauhini Studios, and renamed it to Vijaya Vauhini Studios. Narayana Swamy was also a successful businessman and industrialist and he lived during the first half of 20th century. He died in his middle ages in the year 1950. As a film producer, he has done over a dozen of films under the banner, Vauhini Studios, and the films were released during late 1930s and 1940s throughout.

 

Moola Narayana Swamy hailed from Tadpatri, Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to a business family. His father was an industrialist who died young and after the death of his father Narayana Swamy took over the family business. He was very young when he took the business and he expanded it further. He set up Rayalaseema Bank, Cuddapah Ceramics, Cuddapah Electric Company, Rayalaseema Textiles, Arrack contracting, Oil mills, Milk Co-op societies etc to name a few.

 

Through business connections he came into contact with Bommireddi Narasimha Reddy. They started off with partnership business in exporting onions to Rangoon, and later ventured into film production as well. Rohini Pictures was then owned by H. M. Reddy and the duo joined the company as partners. But due to certain differences, they separated from H. M. Reddy and started their own production company. It was named Vauhini Pictures, which went on to become a very successful film company from south India.

 

In 1948, Narayana Swamy properties and businesses were seized due to income tax problems, and the studio was given on lease to Vijaya Productions. Narayana Swamy died in 1950 when he was only 38 years old, and later the family went into deep financial troubles. His eldest son was only 11 years old then.
