Monika Devi Biography

Monika Devi is an Indian weightlifter. She has won silver medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She also took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 68 kg category. As she could not pass the dope test she was dropped.

She was born on 1st March 1983. She takes part in weightlifting women’s 69 kg category, weightlifting women’s 69 kg, clean and jerk category and weightlifting women’s 69 kg snatch category. She could take part in the 2010 Commonwealth Games only after clearing the doping charges. She won bronze medal in the women’s 69 kg category.

She was selected to represent India in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and had to face controversies related to that. She was shortlisted along with Shailaja Pujari in the selection event for 2008 Olympics. There were some misconceptions that Shailaja bribed the officials of weightlifting federation to pick her for Olympics. However in the end, Monika Devi was selected and Shailajaa was announced as reserve.

When Dev Dutt Sharma was announced as the coach for Monika by the weightlifting federation, this was considered to be a breach of the directive of sports ministry. Only a women coach should go with a women weightlifter to the Olympics.

It was announced that the result of dope test conducted in India before Olympics was positive and so she was left behind in the 2008 Summer Olympics conducted in Beijing. She protested it saying that this was done in favor of Shailaja Pujari. The office of the Prime Minister has to intervene in this matter. But finally as the list of participants was already submitted to the authorities of Olympic Games, she could not take part in the game.

Press Trust of India also reported in March 2009 that the test sample sent to the laboratory in Tokyo also showed positive results. However she and her sister L. Mamta stated that this is a conspiracy to end her career in weightlifting and they claimed to sue Press Trust of India for giving such incorrect information.
