Mohan Babu Biography

Mohan Babu Manchu is a film producer, director and actor associated with Telugu and Tamil cinema. He predominantly works in Telugu films. He received Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu) for the movie, Peddarayudu (1995). In 2008 he received CineMAA Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie Yamadonga. He has remade several Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi hits to Telugu. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from University of California, Berkely for his contributions to the field of art and cinema. He has acted in more than 500 movies which include lead roles as well as character and comic roles. Alluri Seetharama Raju, Swargam Narakam, Sivaranjani, Padaharella Vayasu, Kondaveeti Donga and Sri Jagadguru Aadi Sankara are among his noted villain characters. Noted actress Lakshmi Manchu is his daughter.

He belongs to Modhugulapalem Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, born in the year 1952. He has 4 siblings and was the eldest of three brothers. He was active in stage plays since the age of 14. He took degree in Physical Education from the YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai and started his career as a physical instructor there. Then Babu attended the Madras Film Institute and entered film industry as well. He regularly visited film studios in hope of an opportunity in films. In 1969 he got an opportunity to work as an apprentice to director Lakshmi Deepak.

He worked behind camera for many years though his dream was to become an actor. In 1974 he marked his acting debut through Kannavari Kalalu and Alluri Seetha Rama Raju, and later portrayed more than 500 roles on screen. He also appeared in 20 Tamil movies. In 1982, Mohan Babu established Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures. Pratigna was the first released movie which was a commercial hit. He is also known as a philanthropist known for social contributions and charity work and he established Sree Vidyanikethan Educational Trust in 1993.
