Mohammed Abdur Rahiman Sahib Biography

Mohammed Abdur Rahiman Sahib, also known as Muhammad Abdur Rahiman was an Indian freedom fighter and politician from Indian National Congress, Kerala. He was also the editor and publisher of the Malayalam daily of Muslims, Al-Ameen which was published from Kozhikode during 1929–1939. He has participated in Salt Satyagraha of 1930, held at Kozhikode beach where he was arrested and imprisoned. Sahib was a social worker who worked towards establishing peace in riot affected areas after Maplah Riots of 1921. Sahib was a member of Calicut Municipal Council from 1931 to 1934 and was member of the Malabar District Board of Madras Presidency from 1932. He was one of the great Muslim leaders and freedom fighter from Kerala. Though his medical reports say he died following a heart attack, many people still believe that he was poisoned to death. A movie ‘Veeraputran’ was made based on N.P. Mohammed's book Mohammed Abdurahiman Oru Novel and the movie became controversial when it showed that Rahiman sahib died of poisoning.  

 

Sahib was born at Azhikode, Kodungallur Taluk of Thrissur in 1898 in the Kingdom of Cochin. After completing his schooling, he studied in Chennai and Aligarh. But he discontinued his studies of Aligarh and joined freedom struggle movement. He participated in Non-cooperation movement and Khilafat movement in Malabar. In 1921, he tried to maintain peace in Maplah Riots areas. But he was arrested by British sentenced to two years imprisonment in October 1921. For his participation in Salt satyagraha conducted at Kozhikode beach, he was lathicharged and punished for nine months rigorous imprisonment at the Kannur Central Jail.

 

Sahib was editor and publisher of the Malayalam daily Al-Ameen, published from Kozhikode. It strengthened the freedom movement. However paper was finally close down in 1939 by the British authorities. Sahib was a great admirer of Netaji and has worked the Forward Block formed by Bose. He was jailed by British from 1940 to 1945. Released from jail, he became active in congress party activities once again. He died on November 23, 1945 at Pottashery village near Chennamangallur just after addressing a public meeting at Kodiyathur.
