Mohammad Shahabuddin Biography

Mohammad Shahabuddin is a very powerful criminal-politician from Bihar, but known as Robinhood for his good deeds. He is widely regarded as the most prominent criminal-politician in India today, comparing with other politicians belonging to the same genre. He got elected to Parliament for 4 terms from Siwan, Bihar representing the Rashtriya Janata Dal party of Lalu Prasad Yadav. He served as MP for four consecutive terms since 1996. In 2009 and 2014 general elections, his wife Hena Shahab, who contested in the same seat, was defeated by Shahabuddin’s long-time opponent Om Prakash Yadav by a huge margin. Mohammad Shahabuddin has also served as MLA of Bihar two times in 1990 and 1995. He was debarred from contesting the 2009 general elections after being convicted for his crimes.

Mohammad Shahabuddin was born on 10 May 1967 in Bihar. He contested Parliament elections for the first time in 1996, and got elected. He represented Janata Dal, and won from Siwan constituency of Bihar. Since then he got elected to Lok Sabha from the same seat for the next three terms in the years, 1998, 1999 and 2004 representing Rashtriya Janata Dal. He was in prison during 2004 general elections. He could fight elections since he was yet to be convicted, and he won by a margin of 100,000 votes. But after the declaration of results, violence spread out. 9 party workers of his opponent Om Prakash Yadav of Janata Dal (United) were found murdered, and Yadav too had to flee from the place for security measures.  He waited outside till the newly elected state government worked on providing him security.

He was convicted in many cases, following which he was debarred from contesting the 2009 general elections. He presented his wife as Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate from Siwan, but lost to Om Prakash Yadav, who got elected to parliament for the first time. The event repeated in 2014 general elections oo, when Om Prakash Yadav defeated Hena Shahab to retain his seat. Yadav fought as an independent candidate in 2009, and as BJP candidate in 2014, and won both.

Shahabuddin came into political limelight in 1990, when he joined Janata Dal youth wing under Lalu Prasad Yadav, and got elected to state assembly for the first time. He retained the seat in 1995 elections too, before he successfully contested in Lok Sabha elections the following year. He is extremely arrogant against the police and other government bodies, and has slapped and shot many policemen including senior officers. The infamous firefight incident on 16 March 2001 is quoted as one among the best instances. In 2007 he was found guilty of "abducting with intent to murder", and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2017, Patna High Court upheld his life sentence in Siwan Murder case.
