Mohammad Hamid Ansari Biography

Mohammad Hamid Ansari is an Indian politician who serves as the 14th Vice President of India. He is elected for this post for two consecutive terms. He also serves as the President of the Indian Institute of Public Administration and Chancellor of Punjab University at Chandigarh.

 

Hamid Ansari was born on 11th April 1937 in Kolkata in West Bengal. He completed his studies at St. Edwards High School at Shimla and St. Xavier’s College and Masters degree in Political Science at the Aligarh Muslim University. In 1961 he started his career in Indian Foreign Service as a civil servant. His wife’s name is Salma Ansari.

 

He served as the Indian High Commissioner to Australia and Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. He received Padma Shri Award for his service in 1984. From 2000 May to 2002 March he served as the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University.

 

On 6th March 2006, he became the chairman of the India’s National Commission for Minorities. He was named by the UPA Left government as Vice President candidate on 20th July 2007 and won in that election against Najma Heptullah. He was reelected for the second term on 7th August 2012. He defeated Jaswant Singh nominated by NDA at that time. He is the only person after Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to be elected as the Vice President of India for two consecutive terms.
