Mithali Raj Biography

Mithali Raj is a celebrated young cricketer associated with Indian women cricket team. She currently serves as team captain and is widely regarded as one of the best women cricket players across the world. After India’s outstanding performance in World Cup for Women 2017, she gained huge popularity. Mithali is the first Indian captain (both men and women) to lead India to an ICC ODI World Cup final twice. But unfortunately she couldn’t win the cup both times. One of the top female batsmen of the game, she currently scores the record of highest run taker in all forms of Women’s cricket combined. She is the only female cricketer to surpass the 6,000 run mark in ODIs.

 

Mithali Raj was born on 3 December, 1982 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. But her mother tongue is Tamil. Her father worked at Indian Air Force. Mithali started playing cricket at the age of 10, and got selected to National Indian team at the age of 17. Since then she is playing cricket at national level and the most valuable player of Indian women’s cricket team at present. During her school days she played with her brother and practised with other boys on net.

 

Mithali’s name was included in the list of probable players of 1997 Women's Cricket World Cup when she was just 14. She made her ODI debut two years later in 1999 at the age of 17. In her maiden match against Ireland she scored a century. She made unbeaten 114 run. She made her Test debut in the 2001 against South Africa at Lucknow. In her third test match, she scored her maiden test double hundred (214) and also created new record of highest score by an individual woman player in international test game.

 

She serves as the captain of Indian team, and has led it to World cup final twice. In a career spanning to about two decades, she scored 6190 runs from Women’s ODI and also played 10 test matches. Her record breaking 214 runs still remains her highest score in test version. She is a recipient of Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.
